Reds Spoil April Game of the Month

Posted in Featured, Game Of The Month

The Okanagan Athletics opened defense of their 2012 BCPBL championship title on Saturday in the RyanWatters.ca Game of the Month.  In a pre-game ceremony the club unveiled their championship banner, their first in franchise history.  Unfortunately this was only thing the Athletics gave the home crowd something to cheer about.

The Coquitlam Reds, who the Athletics beat in the Final Four championship tournament last season, spoiled the festivities shutting out the home side 3-0.

Curtis Taylor would baffle the Athletics batters all afternoon and would throw a complete game, one-hit shutout in the victory.  Taylor’s performance would earn him the Wild Play Element Parks Player of the Game honours.

Taylor would get help from his offense even before he touched the baseball on Saturday afternoon.  In the top of the first Max Holllingsworth hit the first pitch he saw to straight away centerfield for a two-run homerun.  Ayden Smith would score on the homer after leading off the game with a single.

In the top of the fourth the Reds would add some insurance as Cameron Williams tripled off Athletics starter Jordan Ramirez and would later score on a pass ball.

The only hit off Taylor was a bouncing ball through the hole on the left side of the infield in the bottom of the fourth by James Ward, two pitches later he was doubled off.

Taylor would strikeout five batters in the victory.

The Athletics will play another doubleheader with the Reds on Sunday at Elks Stadium beginning at 11:00am.

The second April Game of the Month will be broadcast on Friday night when the Kelowna Raiders host the Kamloops Rattlers in the Thompson-Okanagan Lacrosse League presented by Intersync Video Productions.  The opening face-off is set for 8:00pm.
