BC Tackles Alberta in Game of the Month

Posted in Featured, Game Of The Month

An exciting first half would lead the raising high school stars of BC to a 30-23 victory of the raising stars of Alberta in the 2013 Border Bowl.

The game, featured as the RyanWatters.ca May Game of the Month, started with a bang as Alberta would fumble on the opening kickoff.  The loose ball was picked up by BC’s Tyrell Ogloff (Sam Robertson) and returned for a touchdown to give the home side a quick 7-0 lead.

Alberta would take their next offensive possession the length of the field lead by quarterback Duncan Little (Didsbury).  Running back Jackson Ryan (Sexsmith) was a one man wrecking crew carrying BC defenders with two impressive runs.  He would finish off the drive rumbling 12 yards for the game tying score with nine minutes to play in the first quarter.

Before the end of the first 15 minutes, BC kicker Callum Duke (Mt. Douglas) would hit on a 28 yard field goal to give BC a 10-7 lead.

The first play of the second quarter was equally exciting as the first play of the game.  Alberta defensive back Quade Smith (Olds) would intercept a Mike Lemoine (Handsworth) pass and return it 75 yards for a pick six giving Alberta their first lead of the game at 14-10.

Four minutes later Alberta kicker Julien Barnett (Bishop McNally) would hit from 38 yards extending the lead to 17-10.

Mount Boucherie Bears quarterback Josiah Joseph would take over from there.  He would connect with Adrial Sellers (Terry Fox) on a 41 yard touchdown pass to even the game at 17 with eight minutes to play in the half.

Alberta would answer six minutes later with the longest play from scrimmage; a 78 yard touchdown pass from Reggie Schoeppe (Salisbury) to Barnett.  The 5’5 Barnett caught the ball at midfield and outraced two BC defenders for the score.  Alberta would miss the extra point.

Following the touchdown, Alberta would try an onside kick that was easily recovered by BC with under a minute to go.  Joseph would connect with Sellers again, this time from 38 yards away for their second major of the game.  BC also missed the extra point resulting in the fourth tie of the game, this time at 23 going into halftime.

The second half of the game was dominated by both defensives.  The only scoring drive was executed by BC, capped by a one yard touchdown run by Ogloff, his second of the game.  The score would be the game winning drive with 9:21 left in the third.

The defensives would pitch a shutout in the final session as BC intercepted two Alberta passes to clinch the first ever Border Bowl.

Following the game both coaching staff commented on how impressed they were with the talent and skill level.  The game saw many highlight reel plays, including two passes that went off a defenders head, only to be caught by a receiver.

BC quarterback Josiah Joseph was named the WildPlay Element Parks Player of the Game with his pair of touchdown passes.

The players, the majority of which are grade 11 student athletes, now must prepare for final exams before heading into the gym in preparation for their senior seasons in high school.
