Posted in Featured, Sports

The Kelowna Jays are preparing for the 10th Annual Canada Day Blast tournament that will open on Thursday at Elks Stadium and at Boucherie Field in West Kelowna.

The tournament will feature four divisions and 16 teams from the US and Canada.  The Jays along with the Okanagan Athletics are the only two teams from the Valley that will participate.

Teams will play each other once in their division and the top two from each move onto the playoff round beginning on Saturday.

The Jays will open the tournament on Thursday night when they take on the Northwest Honkers at 8:30pm at Elks Stadium.  The Athletics will play the first game of the tournament when they face the Calgary Red Birds on Thursday at 6:00pm.

The three-time defending champion Seattle Studs will begin their quest for four in a row when they battle the Victoria Mavericks on Friday at 1:30pm at Elks Stadium. Last year’s runners up the Nanaimo Coal Miners play their first game on Friday at 6:00pm when they play the Everett Merchants.

Friday night the Jays will take on the Parkland White Sox at Elks at 8:15pm, before ending the round robin play on Saturday evening, again at 8:15pm when they face Burnaby.

The first playoff game will take place on Sunday at 1:00pm as the top seed will face the eighth seeded team.  The championship game is scheduled for Monday, Canada Day, at 2:45pm.

Tournament organizer Bill Bayne says, “The purpose of the tournament is to bring top teams together to all get better and bring better calibre baseball to Kelowna. People might not realize what the calibre of baseball is but it’s very high.”

The top team will take home $16,000 in prize money.
