Enzo Paal Named Second Star

Posted in Featured, Sports

UBC Okanagan’s Enzo Paal is named Canada West’s second star.

Hosting their first weekend of Canada West soccer games, the UBC Okanagan Heat swept both Fraser Valley and Trinity Western for a surprising two wins and a 3-1 start to their season. This weekend’s sweep was guided by the right foot of second-year forward Enzo Paal (Coldstream, B.C.).

On Friday night, with a large crowd cheering on the home team and the game knotted 1-1 heading into extra time, Enzo made his mark as he right-footed the ball past the Cascade keeper.  Dylan Abbott (Salmon Arm, B.C.) sent a free kick to Jerry Ryan, who made a run down the line and crossed to Paal for the game-winner.

On Saturday, in another 1-1 match this time with the Spartans, it was in the 54th minute when Enzo lifted his team to a victory.

Paal worked his way between two defenders to the middle lane before dishing left to sophomore Logan Abbott (Salmon Arm, B.C.) on the left side.  Abbott then deftly set the plate of fourth-year forward Jorden Leib’s second goal of the year to secure what would be the game-winning goal 54 minutes in.

For his brilliance on the hockey-assist during the game-winning play in addition to the rest of his offensive hustle and harassment, Paal was awarded the Heat Player of the Game honour.

With Enzo’s offense he delivered two home wins to UBC Okanagan, and has led the team to a 3-1 start in their historic first-ever Canada West season and are now owners of the hottest four-game start among Canada West debut squads since 2009.

Paal and his Heat teammates look to keep their unblemished home record this weekend intact when they host the Victoria Vikes Friday night at 6 p.m., followed by the No. 1 UBC Thunderbirds Saturday at 7 p.m.
