February Game of the Month Recap

Posted in Featured, Game Of The Month

The Holy Cross Crusaders weathered the storm in the first quarter, then dominated the next three on route to a 76-64 victory over the kSS Owls to win gold.

The Owls jumped out to a 21-20 lead after the first quarter in the championship game of the 41st Annual Interior Savings Western Canada basketball tournament.  Grade 10 point guard Parker Simson led the Owls with seven points.  Defensively however the Owls had no answer for Taylor Browne who led the Crusaders with 10 points in the quarter including two-three pointers.

After the first 10 minutes came to close, Crusader point guard Joaquin Bennett-Boire took command of the game.  He scored eight of his 26 points in the contest in the second frame and was a clearly the best player of the floor.

The Crusaders pushed the February Game of the Month out of reach in the third quarter, scoring 21 points.  Browne hit his third-three pointer of the game, while Henry Maduabueke showed his pure strength under the net.

Any hope of an Owls come back in the final quarter were dashed by Boire.  He scored 11 points in the quarter and commanded the offensive, while providing blanket coverage defensively on Owls shooter Nav Sandhu.

Senior Buzz Truss was the best Owl on the floor, scoring a game high 29 points, including 16 in the final quarter.  Truss, Cooper Simson and Eli Cato were hampered by foul trouble all night.

Truss was named the WildPlay Element Parks Player of the Game.

The Walnut Grove Gators beat the Burnaby South Rebels to claim the bronze medal.

The Owls have now appeared in the championship game six times, but have not won the championship in 32 years.

The regular season continues on Tuesday for the Owls when they visit the Rutland Voodoos.
