Heat in Action

Posted in Featured, Sports

School is back in session and the UBC Okanagan Heat are back in action.  The golf team will host a tournament, while the women’s volleyball team are in exhibition action for the first time.  Here are the details courtesy of Cary Mellon (UBC Okanagan Sports Information Officer)….

Men’s & Women’s Golf – A strong showing in Parksville, B.C last weekend has the Heat feeling confident heading into their second tournament of the season, which they will host at the Okanagan Golf Club on Kelowna, B.C from September 14th-15th.

The Heat men’s team will be looking to capitalize on home-course advantage and keep the momentum going after a third-place finish to begin the season. Will Deck (4th year, Kelowna, BC) shot a red-hot two-day total of 140 in Parksville, B.C last weekend to win the tournament, while Cody Bell (4th year, Salmon Arm, BC) finished eighth.

Meanwhile, the Heat women placed an impressive fourth in the tournament. First-year golfers Carolyn Lee and Kelsey McGillis combined for a two-day total of 375. Lee finished three strokes off the pace with a score of 164 to place third, while McGillis finished 12th – an impressive showing by both rookie golfers in their first PACWEST tournament.

As mentioned, the Heat will play host this weekend, welcoming the PACWEST to Okanagan Golf Club (Quail and Bear Course) for a two-day tournament beginning Saturday. First group to tee off on Saturday is at 1:20 p.m. and the first group on Sunday will hit the links at 9 a.m.

Women’s Volleyball – After a hard-fought playoff loss to Mount Royal University to conclude the 2012-2013 Canada West season, the Heat will begin preparations for this season, hosting friendly scrimmages and games this weekend with the Saskatchewan Huskies and the Trinity Western Spartans.

Although the Heat will miss the services of Alexandra Basso (Kelowna, BC), the Heat’s only graduating player from last season, the core remains intact the team boasts impressive depth. A majority of fifth-year players, Myrte Schön (5th year, Langley, BC), Lenai Schmidt (5th year, Vernon, BC), Jill Festival (5th year, Calgary, AB), and Kendra Wayling (5th year, Castlegar, BC) will bring poise to the Heat court, while head coach Steve Manuel will have the added advantage of infusing talent from the bench to drive production when needed. An impressive list of second-year players, including Canada West All-Star and CIS All-Rookie Emily Oxland (North Vancouver, BC), will look to build upon early success in their rookie campaigns this season.

All three teams will be involved in scrimmages on Friday and Sunday, with games being held on Saturday. The Heat will play Trinity Western at 2:00 p.m., and then Saskatchewan at 6:00 p.m. All scrimmages and games will be held at the UBC’s Okanagan campus Gymnasium.
