Heat vs. Dinos Preview

Posted in Featured, Game Of The Month

The first of two January Games of the Month presented by Intersync Video Productions comes up this Saturday when the UBC Okanagan Heat volleyball teams host the University of Calgary Dinos.

The womens game will feature two of the better blocking teams in Canada West.  In 55 sets the Heat have totalled 126.5 blocks, an average of 2.30 a set, good for fourth most in the Canada West.  The Dinos on the other hand are fifth best in the league compiling 123 blocks in 54 sets for an average of 2.28 a set.

The Heat women are coming off two big wins in Regina last weekend to raise their record to 9-5, sitting in fifth place with 18 points.

Katy Klomps will need to be a factor in the match on Saturday.  She has the sixth best hitting percentage in Canada West with her 90 kills and leads the league with 72 blocks.

The Heat will also look to veteran Alex Basso who leads the club with 134 kills and 153.5 points.  Freshman Emily Oxland will need to have a good game at the serving line with the second most Aces in the league with 35.

The Dinos are led by a pair of senior hitters in Lindsey Doland and Sarah Moncks with 160 and 158 kills respectively.    The Dinos lead Canada West with 662 kills in 54 sets an average 12.26 kills a game, but defensively they have given up the second most (664).

The Heat will have to know where Courtney Dawson is on the floor with her third best hitting percentage.  She leads the Dinos with 200 points through 54 sets.  Moncks has 186 points, while Doland has tallied 184.5.

Defensively the Dinos have been terrific with keeping the play alive and setting up the next play.  They lead Canada West in assists with 607, or an average of 11.24.

The Dinos boast a 4-3 record on the road, while the Heat have an impressive 5-2 record at home and are fighting for playoff positioning.

On mens side, the Heat are coming off their only two victories of the season, after sweeping Regina last weekend in Saskatchewan.    The Heat and Dinos have identical 2-12 records.

The Heat will look to Riley McFarland to have continued success after an unbelievable weekend in Regina.  The White Rock native would compile 56 kills and was named the Canada West Athlete of the Week.  On the season McFarland has totaled 166 kills and 189 points to lead the Heat.  Greg Niemantsverdriet will also need to have a big game as the Heat will look to him to grow his 113 kills and 139 points.

Defensively the Heat are led by veteran Brett Uniat who has 43 blocks.   Jeremy Fostvelt has been terrific this season with 119 digs.

The Dinos are on an eight game losing streak after being blasted by the Golden Bears last Saturday in a three set sweep.

The 1-6 road Dinos will again lean on Connor Frehlich to score points.  The 6’6 freshman leads the club with 141 points and 121 kills.  Greg Mann leads the Dinos in kills with 124.  The 7’1 Ivan Kartev has 77 kills.

Defensively Cory Meeuwisse has tallied 124 digs and Kartev has 46 blocks to lead the Dinos.

Both teams are evenly matched as the Heat will look to win their first on home court this season.
