How ‘Sweep’ It Is

Posted in Featured, Sports

Game One:

The Okanagan Rockets kicked off their 10th BC Major Midget League season in winning fashion.

The Rockets defeated the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds 10 – 3 at Capital News Centre Saturday afternoon.

Cory Santoro opened up scoring for the Rockets within the first two minutes of the 1st period, setting the momentum for the rest of the game.

The Rockets would go on to net two more goals in the first period thanks to Mahlon Head and Captain Branden Wagner.

Fraser Valley wouldn’t give up though, racking up three goals in the second period but that only fuelled the Rockets desire to win.

The team would score four goals in the second period then go on to net three more in the third.

Jake Kryski (1G, 3A), Tyson Jost (2G, 2A) and Liam Finlay (1G, 3A) lead the team with four points each in the game.  Mahlon Head was right behind with two goals and an assist.

Rockets goaltender Brendan Barry would face 19 shots on net in the victory.

Game Two:

It was a nail biting victory for the Okanagan Rockets on Sunday.

The Rockets defeated the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds 6 – 5 for a sweep in their opening BCMML weekend at Capital News Centre.

The T-birds would open up scoring one minute into the first period but Mitchell Oliver would quickly get the Rockets on the board.

The rest of the game would keep fans on the edge of their seats, as Fraser Valley failed to go down in game two of the series like they did during the Rockets season opener on Saturday.

The match-up was tied 3 – 3 heading into the third period when the Rockets busted out two quick goals.  Fraser Valley would continue to fight, add two more in the third period themselves but it was Linden Hora who scored the game winner for the Rockets.

Shots on goal were 37 – 19 in favour of the Okanagan Rockets.  Brendan Barry made 14 saves in the victory while Josh Johnston would net his first BCMML goal for the team.

The Rockets will now hit the road for the first time this season as they head off to the BCMML Showcase at the Richmond Oval.  The Rockets will take on the Valley West Hawks.  Both teams are currently 2 – 0 – 0 in the early season.
