It was a tough start to the new KIJHL season for the Kelowna Chiefs as they were defeated in their opener, 6-2 in Summerland on Friday night.

The game opened up with an unassisted goal from Chiefs newcomer Ethan Rusnack at 13:51 in the first period.  The lead didn’t last long as the Steam’s Braden Saretsky answered back to tie up the game.  Before the end of the first 20 minutes of play, the Chiefs trailed 2 – 1.

Heading into the second period, the Steam added two more goals before the Chiefs’ Kelsey Byrne scored his first KIJHL goal with Kevin Roth picking up the assist.

The Steam would go on to score their last two goals of the match-up in the third period to take the game 6 – 2.

The Kelowna Chiefs will be back at Rutland Arena for their home opener tomorrow night (Saturday) as they welcome the Golden Rockets.  Puck drop is at 7pm.
