Kelowna Raiders Win Shaw Cup

Posted in Featured, Game Of The Month

Friday night the Kelowna Raiders won back to back Shaw Cup Championships after a 9-5 victory over the Kamloops Rattlers, sweeping the finale.

The Raiders defence was stifling as they kept the talented Rattlers offense on the outside looking in.

After the Rattlers jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first period, the Raiders would finally respond on a tally from Braden Renner.  He would score on the short side past Mike Smith the Rattlers netminder.

However just a couple of minutes later the Rattlers would regain a two goal advantage on another outside shot and would lead 3-1 going into the first break.

Less than 40 seconds into the second period Joe Brown would get his first of two in the period to draw the Raiders within one.  Less than two minutes later Ryan Sage would also net his first of two in the period to tie the game at three.  Brown would net his second of the frame three minutes later to give the hometown Raiders their first lead of the contest.

After the Rattlers would tie it again, Sage would score for the second time with nine minutes left to regain the Raiders lead.  Before the end of the period Renner would pot his second of the game to give the Raiders a two goal lead heading into the final 20 minutes.

The Raiders would seal the championships with three goals in the third period including two from Jordan Innes and one from the Captain Jacob Illichmann.

Goaltender Graham Cousins was terrific between the pipes stopping shot after shot in the third when the Rattlers were pressing.  Cousins was named Ryan’s WildPlay Element Parks Player of the Game.

The Shaw Cup is the oldest lacrosse trophy in Canada and resides in the Armstrong museum.
