Okanagan College Baseball Takes the Field

Posted in Featured, Sports

The 2012 version of OC Coyotes baseball hits the turf at Elks Stadium this weekend for the start of then 2012 Championship Season of the Canadian College Baseball Conference.  They will host the University of Calgary Dinos ( U of C) at 6:30 Friday night and then be joined by Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Wolfpack for Saturday and Sunday where each team will play each other twice. There will be tons of exciting college baseball this weekend:

Friday – 6:30pm – U of C vs OC
Saturday – Noon – TRU  vs  OC
3:00pm – TRU  vs  U of C
6:00pm – U of C vs  OC
Sunday – 10:00am – U of C  vs  TRU
1:00pm – TRU  vs  OC

The Coyotes are coming off a month long spring training exhibition season that saw them play 18 games against several top U.S. Junior Colleges.  Some of the colleges were Central Arizona, Phoenix College, Arizona Christian, College of Southern Idaho and the past 2 weekends they were 4 and 4 against Spokane Falls CC and 2 Seattle area teams, Pierce JC and Olympic JC.  The games against these teams were an invaluable experience and certainly helped ready them for the CCBC season.  The OC kids also worked hard in the weight room and batting cages all winter getting bigger and stronger to make them more competitive.

The pitching in the spring games was a pleasant suprise, especially veteran Keifer Rodway, who last pitched on opening day 2011, as he was sidelined for almost a year with a serious are injury.  He has been unbeatable so far.  Big lefty Zack Burlon was very effective against the U.S. teams as was righty Marcus Drewry.  Geoff May is also ready for a big season however he needs to establish his control and confidence.  The team defence has been stellar against the tough U.S. college teams.

Offensively timely hitting will be key as the young Coyotes need to establish some consistency with the bat.  Newcomer 1st baseman Greg Adams swings a big bat and will hit cleanup.  He will be ably supported by shortstop Brian Elias, outfielder Jeff Bouchard, 3rd baseman Garrett Weise and 2nd baseman Reid Fischer.  Weise and Fischer also figure strongly in the teams pitching plans.  The catching duties will be shared by 2nd year Matt Sanderson and outstanding rookie Tyler Pentland.

Head coach Geoff White along with assistant coaches Jared Johnson and Lyall Foran have worked extremely hard improving the baseball skills of all the OC players and now are excited to see how they perform against the other CCBC teams.

Be there when the 2012 Coyotes hit the field for some exciting baseball action!
