Okanagan Rockets Win KIMMT

Posted in Featured, Game Of The Month

For just the second time in tournament history, an Okanagan based team claimed GOLD at the Kelowna International Elite Midget Hockey Tournament (KIMMT) on Sunday afternoon as the Okanagan Rockets defeated the Waterloo Wolves 7-3.

The Rockets finished the 35th Annual tournament undefeated after winning all five round robin games, then recorded a 4-3 semi-final victory on Saturday before clinching the gold on Sunday.

Jake Kryski opened the scoring for the Rockets in the first period, six minutes in as Cory Santoro and Gen Bryshun picked up assists at the 14:07 mark.

Then with 50 seconds left Tyler Jost potted his fourth of the tournament from Liam Findlay and Mitchell Oliver to give the Rockets a two goal lead heading into the second period.

Just 55 seconds into a wild second frame Findlay scored to put the Rockets ahead 3-0, Carter Hikichi picking up a helper.

The Wolves finally got on the score sheet at the 7:31 mark as Adam McPhail scored his third of the tournament.  Then six minutes later, tournament MVP Gary Mantz went high on Rockets goalie Reid Kilburn to bring the visitors within one.

However two minutes later Jost scored his second of the game on a pretty set up from Findlay at the 15:51 mark.  The goal proved to be the game winner.

With just under two minutes to play, Santoro was the beneficiary of some terrific work from Tanner Campbell to put the Rockets in front 5-2 heading into the final period.

The Wolves got a goal from Kevin Orleman, his third of the tournament at the 15:06 mark, but that’s as close as they would come.

The Rockets scored back to back empty net goals from Kristan Blumenschein and Findlay to seal the gold late in the final period.

Finlay with four points (2+2) was named the WildPlay Element Parks Player of the Game, while Jost recorded two goals, including the game winner and an assist.

This is the second gold medal for the Okanagan Rockets organization at the KIMMT tournament, winning their first in 2010.  They are only Okanagan based team to win this event in its 35 year history.

The game was also the January Game of the Month presented by Intersync Video Productions
