Rattlers Spoil Raiders Party

Posted in Featured, Game Of The Month

The Kelowna Raiders opened the home portion of their 2013 schedule on Friday night with an 8-5 loss against the Kamloops Rattlers in the RyanWatters.ca April Game of the Month.

Despite having only 11 players and a goalie the Rattlers controlled the pace of most of the game, especially early on.  They would pick up where they left off last week, outscoring the Raiders 8-0 in the third period on route to a 14-7 win.

In the first period on Friday night, the Rattlers scored four times including two goals from Riley Donahue, the first just 34 seconds into the contest.  He would score his second four minutes later to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.  Captain Mark Jurista scored the third Rattlers goal at the six minute mark, before Shawn Donahue (Riley’s brother) tallied at the 10 minute mark.

To compliment the offensive attack by the Rattlers, goaltender Mike Smith came up with some eye catching saves to keep the Raiders off the score sheet.

In the second frame the home side finally found some life, scoring seven seconds into the middle period as Jordan Innes got his third of the season.

The Rattlers would punch back with a goal from Russ McIntosh, his first of the year, at the six minute mark, exactly one minute before Innes lit the lamp again for his second of the night and fourth of the season.

With the score 5-2, McIntosh again would score for the Rattlers, which would turn out to be the game winning goal.  After 40 minutes the visitors held a 6-2 lead, as Smith again kept the Raiders attackers frustrated.

In the final period the Raiders finally showed their offensive skill as they would creep within two after Captain Jacob Illichmann scored for the first time this season, and Innes potted his third giving him a hat trick.

However with seven plus minutes to go, Jurista would get his second of the night to seal the deal.

Ryan Phillips did score for the Raiders, getting his first of the season with five minutes to go, but any Raider comeback hopes were dashed when Jesse Wessel scored an empty netter with 45 seconds to go.

Rattlers’ (2-0) goaltender Mike Smith was stellar to say the least and was the difference maker in their second consecutive win over the Raiders to start the season.

The Wild Play Element Parks Player of the Game was Raiders forward Jordan Innes with three goals, watch his interview with Ryan following game.

The Raiders (0-2) are back on the floor on Friday night when they travel to Armstrong to take on the Shamrocks in their season opener.
