What a season for the head coach of the women’s volleyball team at UBC Okanagan, Steve Manuel in his 13th year.

He led his club to a 15-7 record, and their first ever appearance in the Canada West post season against the Mount Royal Cougars.   During the season his team was ranked nationally in eight of the 14 weekly coach’s polls.  Perhaps most impressively he was able to do this with only one “second team All-Star” (Emily Oxland), and a lineup of only one fifth year player.

His efforts on the court made Steve not only the Canada West Coach of the Year in Women’s Volleyball, but the CIS Coach of the Year in Women’s Volleyball as well.

Off the court Steve is very active in the local volleyball community, promoting, organizing and teaching.  In 2013 he also started the Junior Heat Volleyball Club to prepare athletes to compete at the Canadian post secondary level (CIS and CCAA).

Three of his players from the 2013 season also achieved Academic All-Canadian status. (Alex Basso, Jill Festival, Kendra Wayling).

Steve can add another award to his 2013 trophy case, as he has been voted in as the third annual RyanWatters.ca Sports Person of the Year.

Special thanks to Creative Trophies and Gifts for donating a beautiful trophy.
