Speed Skating Towards Sochi

Posted in Featured, Videos

Long distance speed skater Nick Goplen is training for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi Russia following a season with on ice highs and off ice lows.

On the ice Nick set personal bests in the 1500m and the 500m in his final race in March in Salt Lake City.  He would set a personal best in the 1000m during the Canada Cup race, also in March.

The Kelowna native now lives in Calgary and attends the University of Calgary enrolled in the Biological Sciences program.  With the University also home to the Olympic Oval training facility it makes being a student athlete a little easier.

The off ice lows, revolved around an injury which saw a cut to his ankle, which has healed and an illness that kept him on the sidelines for a few weeks.

Despite the set backs Nick finished strong in March and is ranked eighth in the nation in the 5000m and 10th in the 10,000m.

Ryan talks with Nick to find out how he is training now that spring has arrived and the Olympics are a real possibility.
