Sport Hero Mike Bencsik

Olympic weightlifter Mike Bencsik has emerged as a force within the Canadian weightlifting scene.  Under the guidance of former Olympian and coach Guy Greavette, Mike has developed into one of the best young weightlifters in the country.

At the Western Canadian Championships in March of 2013, Mike earned a silver medal snatching 131 kg and 169 kg in the clean and jerk. He then matched that performance at the Canadian Championships where he claimed another bronze medal with lifts of 137 kg in the snatch and 167 kg in the clean and jerk.

Mike is currently ranked 18th in the Common Wealth and 2nd provincially in his weight category.

Away from his competitive pursuits, Mike is instrumental to the development and delivery of Weightlifting in BC.  He helps to promote and deliver the National Coaching Certification Courses for Weightlifting which provide guidance on proper techniques and teaching of the sport.  He also runs a weightlifting club in the area where he works to support other athletes that look up to his success.  This gentle giant, is always giving of his time and helpful in supporting sport delivery in the region.
