Vees Moving on in BCHL Playoffs

Posted in Featured, Sports

The Penticton Vees are moving on in the BCHL playoffs after a 4-0 shutout of the Chilliwack Chiefs to win their playoff series 4-2.

After a scoreless first, Bryce Gervais would open the scoring at the 5:35 of the second from Steven Fogarty and Joey Benik.  That goal would turn out to the game winner.

Wade Murphy would grow the Vees lead at the 18:15 mark of the second frame from Mario Lucia and Benik.  Just before the period would end Lucia would light the lamp on the power play with 11 seconds to go, giving the Vees a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes.  Travis St. Denis would pick up an assist.

In the final 20 minutes the Vees would play solid defence, crushing the Chiefs dreams of a comeback.  Then with the Chiefs net empty and 1:17 to play Benik would round out the scoring with an empty netter that was unassisted.

The Vees goaltender Chad Katunar was named the game’s first star, turning away all 32 shots directed his way.  Mario Lucia was the second star with a goal and an assist, while the Chiefs’ goalie Mitch Gillam was named the game’s third star.

The Vees will now host the second seeded Merritt Centennials in the Interior Conference final.  Merritt would take out Prince George in four straight.  Game 1 and 2 will be at the South Okanagan Events Centre on Tuesday and Wednesday before the series shifts to Merritt next Friday.  The Vees would win the seasonal series 7-1, with three games needing overtime.
