Rockets Win December Game of the Month

Posted in Featured, Game Of The Month

An exciting RyanWatters.ca December Game of the Month, as the Okanagan Rockets score the game winner with 48 seconds left to beat the Valley West Hawks 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.

In the first period the Rockets buzzed the Hawks net, outshooting them 17-6.   Tanner Wishnowski opened the scoring for the home side at the 4:44 mark, his sixth of the season.

However the Hawks answered just four minutes later as Matt Bradley got his first of the day, tying the score.

Hawks goalie Kyle Cheema stood on his head in the first and was a large reason why the score was tied after the first period.

In the middle frame the Rockets continued to pour it on and scored twice despite a number of spectacular saves from Cheema.  Cory Santoro and Tanner Campbell on the power play scored for the Rockets.

Bradley did answer for the Hawks before the end of the period, allowing the visitors to hang around, even though they were badly outshot 31-12 after two.

The third period was easily the best for the Hawks who applied major pressure on the fore check.  Bradley scored his third of the game with the man advantage to tie the game half way through the frame.  Then a couple of minutes later, Trevor Ayre gave the Hawks their first lead on his third of the campaign.

The Rockets started to apply more pressure and tied it on a quick release from defenseman Kristen Blumenschein, his third of the season.

Then with just 48 seconds to go, Wishnowski received a beautiful pass from Liam Findlay and went five-hole on Cheema for the game winner.    With his two goals, Wishnowski was named the WildPlay Element Parks Player of the Game.

The Rockets improve to 19-3-1, while the Hawks drop to 15-7-1.

These two clubs will meet on Sunday at 10:00am at the Capital News Centre.
